The Future of Emails: I

Email is the primary form of communication in any business for more than 20 years. Yet study after study proves that it lacks productivity-wasting time. On an average, an employee sends and receives 122 emails per day. They also have approximately 150 unread mails in their inbox. And the employees spend a shocking one-third time on their mail at their workplace.

Many of the employees have a disorganised inbox which clutters the brain of employees, getting to Inbox Zero is considered as a badge of honour. At that time there were more and more companies that use AI bots like Slack, which many believed would be the final nail in email’s coffin back in 2014 when Slack got popular.

Despite all the reports, feedback and response there was a point where email started growing at a very fast rate. By 2016 there were 2.6 billion email users worldwide, which have been reported to increase to 2.9 billion by 2019. Which according to statistics mean, one-third of the global population will have an email.

There are many smart minds out there that are looking forward to the future of email, here’s how:

Email is getting more and more secured.

Recently Slack made an update in their privacy policy which lets the employers read direct message of employees without them knowing about it. So think again before you gossip about your boss if you are using Slack. Keeping gossips aside, there are more important and sensitive data which cannot be shared with people outside your organisation for which a secured email client like ProtonMail are designed for. The messages sent via ProtonMail are encrypted end to end, as the company’s servers are in Switzerland, as the privacy law over there are very strict. Your business can set it up so that even admins can’t access all the accounts. No team chat client can do that yet.

When emails start looking and working like browsers & apps

Recently Google announced a Gmail developer preview of AMP for Email. With the help of Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) mobile web pages load faster which they are using it to build a self-contained web experience for email. For example, you get an email from a tech company showcasing a laptop on sale, so you will get an option of directly purchasing it, without getting redirected to another page, but purchasing it directly from your inbox itself. This feature is not much of a use for internal mails or B2B mails, but this can be useful for B2C businesses where an organisation directly deals with end customers.

Want emails to organise your life?

One must be getting many mails in a day, so an inbox is just like a dumping ground of many things going on around you. Just like those “no-rely addresses” emails you receive every day. Letting an AI scrape your mails to put meetings on your calendar is just the tip of the iceberg. Smart email client like Newton, Edison and Astro have built-in Artificial Intelligence (AI) which can filter your mail box; keeping the important mails on top, unsubscribe to spam mails and create timelines around themes like emails about an upcoming presentation or an upcoming business trip.

So as of now don’t bid adieu to your emails, it has a lot more to come, keeping in mind what the latest trends are in 2018.
